What You Need to Know

Western Sahara is claimed by Morocco who administers most of Western Sahara’s territory. The Polisario Front administers portions of the south from a government in exile in Algeria. In 2007, Morocco proposed an arrangement for governing Western Sahara that would involve a degree of autonomy. The Polisario Front wants a referendum that includes independence as an option. The dispute remains unresolved.

Saharawi people represent nearly half the population with Berbers making up another twenty percent. Western Sahara GDP is about US$2,500 per person (compare with US$13,200 for Mexico, US$46,000 for the United States, and US$1,200 for Haiti).

Infrastructure is not well developed. There are about 2,000 telephones in the country and no cell phones.
