What You Need to Know
Mauritania is an Islamic Republic meaning that Islam is the state religion and Shari'a law is applied. White Moors, who are a mix of Arab and Berber, have the highest social status and continue to practice slavery, though the practice has been outlawed. Other Arabs hold a similarly high status. Black Moors, related linguistically and culturally to the White Moors, have a somewhat lower status. Other black Africans are regarded as of even lower status and experience prejudcial treatment.
Religious extremists and terrorists have become active in Mauritania in recent years. The killing of a Christian missionary in 2009 resulted in most missionaries departing the country. Nevertheless, opportunities for ministry exist. Prayers in behalf of the people of Mauritania are definitely needed. Also pray that God will give wisdom and protection to His servants who seek to minister in this country.
